Bio-Blocks have the potential to revolutionize the industry by offering a zero-carbon alternative to conventional concrete blocks. This translates to a significant reduction in carbon footprint, with the Bio-Block Spiral itself eliminating one metric ton of CO2 emissions compared to traditional construction.

The roof volume, shaped by the extrusion of repeating peaks and slopes, establishes a captivating visual rhythm that integrates the house with its sloping environment. The Colburn Center will be equipped to take a modern approach to multi-media technology and production. The facilities include commercial-quality recording and streaming capabilities, and performance spaces will be outfitted with state-of-the-art lighting. Public spaces include an outdoor plaza, giving visitors a front-row seat to the performing arts, and gardens which provide much-needed green space and pedestrian access to nearby public transit hubs. Preserving existing buildings and using low-carbon timber construction minimizes the project’s environmental impact. Additionally, rooftop photovoltaic panels generate clean energy, while a rainwater harvesting system reduces the reliance on municipal water. Milan-based Japanese designer Keiji Takeuchi presents walking sticks & canes, an exhibition of 18 international designers in the Quadreria space at Triennale Milano during Milan Design Week 2024. As the title suggests it, the curator takes on the world of walking aids to unpack their history and relatively broad definition, which underwent unique evolutions in different eras. To do so, Takeuchi invites eighteen designers from around the globe to showcase a a variety of examples that question what walking sticks and canes represent in our lives.

The Makers’ KUbe is designed by the architects at Bjarke Ingels as a monumental 50,000-square-foot structure built with mass timber. The diagrid frame, engineered by StructureCraft, utilizes tight-fit dowels and glulam beams to create a strong, all-wood structure. This approach minimizes carbon-intensive concrete and showcases traditional Japanese joinery techniques. The building’s stripped-back facade features a mix of transparent and opaque glass, offering glimpses of the building’s inner workings and showcasing the creativity within. Biodegradable hemp-wool insulation provides thermal performance, further emphasizing the KUbe’s commitment to sustainability.
The Star extends beyond its core office space, aiming to become an integrated part of the Hollywood scene. The street level will feature a walkable area with an expansive LED screen, inviting restaurants, community spaces, a theater, and a gallery. Visitors to the Sónar+D can walk around the exhibitions and see, test, and experience creative technology and innovative art that employs research, AI-generated visuals, and experimental video games. The light-filled, six-story interior of the KUbe is an open-plan studio space designed to encourage collaboration. It houses everything from dedicated 3D printing and robotics labs to a cafe, all organized around a central core. Flexible floorplates allow for a variety of configurations, from single-height classrooms to double-height studios. A fire-resistant spiral staircase provides a unique pathway and encourages chance encounters, further sparking creativity.
